In the Winner Circle

I am happy to report that I am a NanoWrimo winner once more. I'm glad to have accomplished this once more and I am real happy its over.

For the last day of Art Everyday Month I am switching gears to sewing,  This is a tote bag I made out of a Bag of Bird seed.  I cut the bag down a little, sewed up the bottom and added some handles.  It cost me about 2.00 to make this and that cost was for the handles.  It makes a great little tote bag out of something that was going to be thrown out.

It has been a lot of fun completing this challenge. I'll be going back to blogging 3 days a week.

A Raven in Charcoal

I added this raven to the page with compressed charcoal.  The background was a gelli print that was embellished with a lot metallic gelatos. It didn't scan very well. The colors are pretty vibrant in real life,

Happy Turkey Day

Happy Turkey Day to all of you who celebrate Thanksgiving.

I took the background from yesterday and added some collaged pictures and words from a greeting card. I was going to journal on the silhouette but I decided I like her black.  I see he as contemplating all that is falling around her in her life.

A Background To Play With

Just a background for today.  This was started with scrapes from my palette.  I added gelatos in the bare spots.  Then I added a stencil over it and painted black acrylic paint. Its pretty bold and beautiful now. Not sure what will come next.

Low Intensity Painting

This is my attempt at a low intensity painting. Using split-complementary colors. Yellow blue violet, red violet and white and black. I like bolder colors so I found this slightly difficult but a great exercise.  My class with Pauline is over with and I am playing catch up.

Studying Under The Masters

This little bird came out of this multi-layered background.  It was paint scrapings from a couple different palette's. So it started with acrylics but I uses Neocolor II WC crayons and gelatos on top with no water added.  I am linking to Art Every Day Month for this art journal page.

Studying Under The Masters

This past weekend I found out about this class being offered in January.  It feels like a great companion to what I have been learning in Pauline Agnew's class.

Join nine artists as we become the “apprentice”. We will share how we became a modern-day apprentice to those who came before us and those who work beside us now. Through discussion and technique videos, each artist will share their week with a “master” as if they are sitting next to them. You’ll learn who their “master” artist studied under, who influenced their work and what techniques and mediums they used.

*This is a nine week course.
*Over 60 discussion and technique videos.
*Supply lists, prompts, book suggestions
*Weekly live chats
*Course material will be available for one full year

The Instructors
Katie Kendrick, Stephanie Lee, Kate Thompson, Christy Tomlinson, Junelle Jacobsen, Danielle Donaldson, Teresa Sheeley, Jenny Wentworth, and Jeanne Oliver♥

To sign up for the class you can go to Jenny Wentworth's blog. There is a sign up button in her sidebar.  There is a pre sale going  on now so get in on the sale price of 48.00. I know the work of several of the artists but not all of them. I think it just might be an amazing course, so I signed up. It will be fun to start the year with this amazing class.

Sketching Hands and an Elephant

I was very busy today so there was little time for art.  I started sketching some hands from a magazine clipping.  Then I realized both hand were missing the thumb.  So I tried adding my own thumb which was problematic to say the least.  I need to look for some better source material. I started a pinterest board on hands so that should help a little.

Since I was so unhappy with my hands I had to do something else.  I got a newsletter from Carolyn Dube today and took her Spark of Art-spriation as a starting point. It was fast and lots of fun.

Playing With Split Complementary Colors

For art everyday, today I did another color mixing study.  This one gave me lots of color combinations I really liked.  Its a split complimentry.  That is a color and 2 colors that are adjacent to its compliment.  The colors would be yellow blue violet and red violet. I started with Hansa yellow medium, and ultramarine blue and quinachridone crimson, and also using white and black. I now really want to make a painting with some of these colors.

Hands

I was working with my coach on Monday and I was talking about how I don't know how to draw hands.  I realize this and that I need practice at it but I don't do it because I think I can't.  It sounded like a cycle where I never step out, never grow.  So right there I decided I would draw a hand this week. So for today's creative endeavor I  found a hand photo with a face so I did both.

Complementary Colors

This is a color study done in my class.  I used Napthol red light and permanent green light, black and white to make all those colors. This is the first time I have done this kind of exercise, it really teaches you a lot about color mixing and how colors work together.

Then we were challenged to paint this image from that color palette.  I had issues with my paint being a little globby, Then I ran out of the color.  I could work on this some more but I am behind in the class so I'll just leave for another day.

Summerl Naturally Leads to Autumn and Winter

Yesterday I posted a study I did for an art class I am taking.  The next step was to paint over the first paper.  This time to use color and marks that evoke summer to me.

Summer often has blue skies and stormy skies, green grass and yellow fields and lots of flowers.

For Autumn I started with a new piece of paper. I began by laying down a wash of red and yellow before adding any other colors.  Swirly skies, leaves in the wind, that's Autumn to me.

For Winter I painted over the the autumn colors with a lot of white and gray.  Winter can have intense blue skies but also dark grey ones and of course lots of snow. This entire process was a fun one.

A Spring Study

Today I am sharing a Spring Study of color that I made for the Draw and Paint What You Love Class with Pauline Agnew.

I chose colors to represent the greens of spring, blue skies and rain and flowers. It was quite fun to do.

A Walk in the Forest

Today's work for Art Every Day Month is a page in my journal.  I used Derwent Inktense blocks on the background and trees, face and hair in acrylics. She came out of the background and then magically those trees appeared.  A fun page to create.

Tracie's Journal

Today for Art Every Day Month and Paint Party Friday, I made a video of a completed journal. I received this as a gift when I went to the Total Alignment Retreat in Sedona last year. Its not a big journal but I have been slowly adding to the pages all year. It was made with Fabriano paper so it was a dream to work in. Some of the work has been shown before but many of you won't have seen this. It also great to see it all together. I hope you enjoy.

Weaving For AEDM

For AEDM today I am switching gears a little. I was looking at my neglected loom and thought I would do some weaving today.

These are some handspun cotton dish towels that I have been making.  This is the second towel I have woven on this warp, I have 2 more to go.

You can check out what others participants are doing here.

Card Making for AEDM

For today's creative meanderings I am making Christmas Cards for a swap. We are including our favorite recipe.

This was my desk early in the process.  From all this chaos came some beautiful cards.

Some of the cards I made.

Once you start making them these cards you can't really stop. It really is a lot of fun.

I used lots of different paper in different combinations.

I had this box of embellishments that made it so easy to finish off the cards.

Do you ever make Christmas Cards?

Soaring To The Next Level

This is a page in a small journal or I should say 2 pages. It was given to me by a friend in Sedona. I had the background and the ravens done for some time.  I knew it  needed something else. I took orange paper and made a cutout of the landscape of Sedona.  I used Inktense pencils to show the difference in the rock colors. The background was made with stencils and spray inks. The ravens were hand cut stencils. It definitely brings back good memories. I chose the words the Next level out of a brochure with soaring bird the rest came naturally.  I like the idea of soaring to the next level. To be going deeper in my art and writing.

How about you what would the next level for you be?

Poppies For AEDM

Poppies are on the menu today.  I did the one on the left in colored pencil awhile ago but it was lonesome on the page.  The two to the right were started with a hand carved stamp. Then I used Inktense pencils and Faber-Castell gelatos and a water brush. The background was also made with gelatos. I like the result.

Check out what other are doing today for art every day month.

Elephants

I made an elephant today.  I started with just adding color with InkTense blocks. Used my water brush a little and then just kept adding color and no additional water.  I've been thinking of elephants lately. I've another started.  Its such a fun image to play with.

This elephant came out of that background I did earlier in the week due to a suggestion by my friend April Cole.

Monoprinting with Glass

I've been doing my exercises for my painting class with Pauline Agnew today.  We are working on monoprinting with a glass plate and then adding ink on top of the print.

It was an interesting exercise that I need tons more practice to master. We painted with watercolor paints, pulled off the print and then used india ink and other inks on top.  This class is making me grow artistically in ways I could not imagine. I haven't shared everything, but its all been great. We have 2 more weeks so I wonder what I'll be doing next.

Then we did monoprints with shapes and different inks and so forth. I pulled the following prints.

This is quite a bit fun. Like working with a gelli print but a little different. I am linking to Art Everyday Month and Paint Party Friday

The Blue's Have It

These are three more pages in my journal for Art Every Day Month. This is a journal I made using Teesha Moore's technique.  It gives you several 3 page spreads.

I had paint scrapes on the page and I really didn't like the look so I started adding blue things to the page. Then I kept going; just grabbing things out of my blue box of papers. It went very organically.

This is the next connecting page.  It had a watercolor wash on the paper and then I just added some spray inks over a plastic doily. One page flows into the other so nicely. I liked that.

Since the third page had a blue watercolor wash on it I continued with that blue theme.

This is how all three pages look when they are all open. I usually don't have them flow like this. Usually I see a page distinct and try not to do any planning like this.
I like the result though.  My entries for three days.

Wouldn't this be a cool house to have. My writing for Nanowrimo is going well. I have an old house in the story so I have been checking out houses on the net for inspiration.  I wonder what is in the top of this house. A reading nook, an art studio or a bedroom.  Seems like it would be a great place to dream in.

AEDM Catching Up

Since I started on day three for Art Every Day Month, I am playing catch up today. The idea is to do something creative, not necessarily finish something.

I did this over 2 days so I am counting in for Nov. 1 and 2. The background was done yesterday and the collage was made this morning.

For Day 4 I am showing this background. I love the colors so much that I am waiting to see what it wants to become. I love my fluorescent paints and my Catalyst tools. So much fun to work with.

Art Every Day

Self portrait in graphite pencil.
I am linking to Sunday Sketches and Art Everyday Month today.

I have always wanted to do Art EveryDay Month but since I am already writing a book it always seemed insane.  I can't go a month without doing art though so I decided I would join in this year.  I am not going to stress if I don't get art done every day.  I am going to use it as a way to warm up my creative muscles and then I'll get to the writing,

Studio Tour

Here is a video of my studio I did for a group event. I thought some of you might enjoy this.
