Using Encaustic Wax

This is my set up to do encaustic wax,  I am using a melting pot and a quilting iron, I also used a heat gun. The wax took quite awhile to heat up. This was my first try at this technique.

The original painting before wax.

and the painting after wax, the color seems so much richer now.  Oh I love working with wax.

My collage in process using the magazine pages and nevrDull.

The second phase, it is not really that blue, the color is more subtle.

This closeup is more the color. Now I need to figure out what I will do next. I think I will look at it for a few days and see what emerges.

  1. Wow ! Some lovely playing !
I was lucky enough to spend a day playing with wax with Judy Wise a few years back at squam. I love the smell, and the richness of encaustics. I just don't feel like I have the space for it in my studio. Plus I am a bit of a klutz and can only imagine how hard it would be to clean up spilled wax !
Do love that richness though !
    Enjoy your discoveries !

  2. I have the melting pot, quilting iron, etc. and also love wax, but haven't done it in so long! I must sound like a broken record. I really like the vividness of the mermaid and (again) how your backgrounds are integrating from the class. xoO

  3. The mermaid looks great! And your collaged pieces are really interesting. I like how you have lots of subtle color showing through.

  5. Hello, Kate, your collage is so beautiful! I just love those colors!

Thanks so much for stopping by The Marmelade Gypsy and your wonderful comment. Yes, I would like to write about those days -- I recently started interviewing my mom's friend Fran and hopefully we can fill in some of the blanks!

  6. I've always been a little afraid to try this technique but it looks so cool and the colours become so rich that I think I'm going to have a go.
