Morning
Why do we bother with the rest of the day,
Why do we bother with the rest of the day,
the swale of the afternoon,
the sudden dip into evening,
then night with his notorious perfumes,
his many-pointed stars?
This is the best—
throwing off the light covers,
feet on the cold floor,
and buzzing around the house on espresso—
maybe a splash of water on the face,
a palmful of vitamins—
but mostly buzzing around the house on espresso,
dictionary and atlas open on the rug,
the typewriter waiting for the key of the head,
a cello on the radio,
and, if necessary, the windows—
trees fifty, a hundred years old
out there,
heavy clouds on the way
and the lawn steaming like a horse
in the early morning.
Billy Collins
buzzing around the house on espresso...I like that line best...not that I do that...just sounds good.
ReplyDeleteHi Kate! How are you doing/! I love that poem...this morning was s o pretty and the weather is so cool bc of offshore hurricane. My life is full of ups and downs isn't it?/LOL I like the UP parts..LOL
ReplyDeleteHi Kate;
ReplyDeleteBeautiful poem, thanks for sharing it! It's funny because today, the day the kidlets go off to school it's officially fall it seems! My son was out on our back deck letting our pup out in the morning and he calls me over to the door and says, "Mom look!" and he breathes out and yep, I could see his breath!!!! I am so not ready for fall! Hugs to you
Ah yes...I love being an early bird! Thanks for sharing the poem, Kate.
ReplyDeleteI like the buzzing aroung on espresso also...
ReplyDeleteOh - lovely poem! We're still mostly hot here, but I'm longing for a day (hopefully soon) when I can wrap up in a blanket and sip hot tea on the patio...
ReplyDeleteBeing an early bird, I can relate. We also had a couple of chilly days but it's warming up again today. I'm ready for autumn!
ReplyDeleteLove mornings too. Having coffee or tea outside
ReplyDeleteand enjoying those moments really add to the day. Life is good!
I took my coffee outside yesterday morning also Kate. Sat in the lawn chair and pondered the day, the cooler air,the "other" early birds, the ones that fly. Thanks for sharing your early morning and that lovely poem. I like the part about the scene on the rug and the cello on the radio.
